Another excellent night at Sheffield's Grapes, featuring three of my very favourite local bands.
First on was Atoness (or half of them... Nate was at his Auntie's birthday party, bless). I reviewed this duo's debut album for Sandman last year, and I love their electro-pop punkery (and, via the wonders of backing tapes or computers or some such techno-wizardry, half an Atoness didn't sound too bare in comparison with a full Atoness, although they could have done with that second voice).
Second was The Scaramanga Six. I'd met their drummer at last year's Soundaloud awards (which was also where I first heard Atoness and Baby Long Legs), and had been introduced to the Morricone brothers at a Cardiacs gig in London (where they kindly gave me a pre-release copy of their excellent new album Dance of Death, before whisking me off to the Cardiacs after-show party), but this was my first time seeing them live. They lived up to and exceeded my very high expectations. What a show!
Finally Baby Long Legs, a band who I've seen play some half-dozen times since the Soundaloud awards last summer (and another band I've recently written about for Sandman). Their joyful bustle and chirpy quirky music are infectious, and I enjoy seeing them live more each time (although I now know all their songs pretty much off by heart, and look forward to them writing some more).
