Artist's Statement

Dan Sumption is a photographer who explores the intersection between fine art and photojournalism. His photographs are generally un-posed, un-staged, and make use of natural lighting.

His work springs from the belief that photography is the confluence of chance, observation and preparation. He strives to maximise the input from each of these elements in order to create striking photographs which appear to tell a story, while the exact details of that story are left to the viewer’s imagination.

The raw materials for his photographs are his own life and surroundings. Various projects include photographs taken while in bars, clubs and parties; while out dog-walking in urban green spaces; or around the home, tidying up after his children.

His work is often steered by the use of digital cameras and software. In particular, the possibilities of low-light photography are explored extensively, and the technology sometimes pushed to its limits in an attempt to photograph darkened environments while retaining an element of technical excellence in the final image.
